n., va"ri*a*ble: A quantity which admits of an infinite number of values in the same expression. nARCHITECTS, PLLC is an emerging internationally-recognized practice based in New York City founded by Eric Bunge and Mimi Hoang in 1999. Ongoing work includes the design of the Wyckoff House Museum in Brooklyn, Ellicott Park at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Pierscape at Chicago’s Navy Pier, a competition-winning project led by James Corner Field Operations, and the firm's competition-winning entry for the groundbreaking adAPT NYC competition to design a micro unit building in Manhattan. The firm’s recent work has focused on a wide range of scales from buildings and interiors to public space design. Recent examples include the ABC Department Store Facades in Beirut, Lebanon, Switch Building in Manhattan (recipient of an AIA Building Type Award), the bamboo MoMA/P.S.1 Canopy (recipient of an AIA Design Honor Award), and Forest Pavilion in Taiwan (recipient of an Architect Annual Design Award). nARCHITECTS is currently retained by both the NYC Parks and Recreation’s and the NYC Department of Design and Construction’s Design Excellence programs. Recent recognition includes their selection in 2012 as a Highly Commended firm in the international WAN (World Architecture News) 21FOR21 competition “to be part of a select group crowned to lead the next generation of designers in the 21st century.” That same year, Wallpaper Magazine named nARCHITECTS one of twenty “world’s most intriguing young practices,” in their Architects Directory 2012. Recent awards include a New York Public Design Commission Award, two AIA NY Design Honor Awards, an AIA NY Building Type Merit Award, an Architect Annual Design Review Honorable Mention, The Architectural League of New York’s Emerging Voices, an AR+D Mention, the Canadian Professional Rome Prize, Architectural Record’s Design Vanguard, the MoMA/P.S.1 Young Architects Program, and two New York Foundation for the Arts grants. nARCHITECTS brings an open-ended approach to the design process based on conceptual clarity and technical innovation. Complex client identities, layered sites and phasing requirements are unpacked and reframed as straightforward design opportunities. Our approach to context is nuanced and agile - sensitive to opportunities and irreverent to cliches. We approach environmental questions as both a technical and cultural issue. In short, we aim for simple designs that produce a richness and flexibility of experience, with an economy of conceptual and material means |
